Official Writing Vocabulary: Essential Verbs
June 3, 2026 · 1 min read
Every sentence you are dictated during the N-400 writing test requires a verb, and the USCIS explicitly draws from a restricted public word list. If you master the spelling of just a few core action words, it is virtually impossible to be caught off guard.
Here are the heavy-hitting official verbs you must know how to spell flawlessly:
🔹 elect / elects /elected (e.g., “We elect the President.”)
🔹 vote (e.g.,”Citizens have the right to vote.”)
🔹 lives / lived (e.g.,”The President lives in the White House.”)
🔹 meets (e.g.,”Congress meets in Washington, D.C.”)
🔹 come / can / pay(e.g., “We pay taxes.”)
Pay close attention to the final”s” on verbs when writing plural versus singular subjects (such as Congress meets vs. Senators meet). Missing a simple subject-verb agreement rule is a frequent reason officers mark a sentence wrong.
Citizen Pass integrates specific spelling drills and keyboard workouts targeting these exact verbs so you don’t drop points over a single missing letter.
