Many applicants who speak andread English well still face setbacks during the N-400 reading test due tosimple, preventable errors caused by stress.
Avoid these 3 critical mistakes on your test day: ❌ Rushing through the sentence: Speed increases the likelihood ofmispronunciation. Read slowly and deliberately. ❌ Skipping small structural words: Missing words like “the,”“is,” “of,” or “to” can change the structuralvalidity. The officer needs to hear every word. ❌ Stopping completely after a mistake: If you mispronounce a word, do notfreeze or stay silent. Pause, take a deep breath, and repeat the word or startthe sentence over.
The official criteria require “meaningful pauses” and an ability toconvey the sentence’s basic intent. It does not require a flawless accent.
Practice reading out loud with Citizen Pass. Our speech-to-text algorithmstrack your speed and precision, helping you correct errors before the realofficer does.
