The N-400 interview isn’t an interrogation. It’s a conversation with a purpose.

The N-400 interview isn’t an interrogation. It’s aconversation with a purpose.

When you walk into that USCIS office, here’s what actuallyhappens:

1.         The officer calls your name and walks you backto their office

2.         You take an oath to tell the truth (right handup)

3.         They review your N-400 application — line byline, with you

4.         They ask about your background, travel, taxes, family

5.         They test your English (reading + writing)

6.         They administer the civics test

7.         They tell you the result — often, right there

Total time: usually 20–45 minutes.

The officer isn’t trying to trick you. They’re verifyingthat what you wrote on your N-400 is still true.

But here’s what makes it nerve-wracking: every answer ison the record. A small slip-up — wrong date, forgotten trip, confused word —can trigger follow-up questions, or worse, an RFE.

That’s why preparation isn’t optional. It’s the differencebetween a 20-minute approval and a 6-month delay.
