Day of Your Interview: What to Bring and What to Expect
May 20, 2026 · 2 min read
The day of your USCIS naturalization interview can feel overwhelming. Here is exactly what to bring, what to expect, and how to walk in feeling prepared.
What to bring with you
Required documents:
- Interview appointment notice (USCIS Form I-797C)
- Green card (Permanent Resident Card)
- State-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID)
- All passports (current and expired) you have used since becoming a permanent resident
- Re-entry permits and refugee travel documents, if you have any
Bring originals AND photocopies of everything. The officer may keep copies.
What happens at the interview
The interview itself usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Here is the typical flow:
- You will be sworn in by the USCIS officer
- The officer will review your N-400 application with you, asking questions to verify your answers
- You will take the English test (reading one sentence and writing one sentence correctly)
- You will take the civics test (up to 10 questions from the 100-question pool, need to answer 6 correctly to pass)
- The officer will let you know the result that same day in most cases
How to dress
Business casual is recommended. You do not need a suit, but avoid t-shirts, shorts, or anything with offensive imagery.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Arriving late (be there at least 30 minutes early)
- Forgetting any required document
- Giving answers that contradict your N-400 application
- Lying or guessing on questions about your background
After the interview
You will get one of three results:
Granted: You will be scheduled for the oath ceremony, where you officially become a US citizen.
Continued: You need to provide additional documents or retake part of the test. You will receive Form N-14 with instructions.
Denied: Your application is denied. You can appeal within 30 days.
Most applicants who have prepared well are granted on the same day.
